My Friend, Bill Herzog
I am sorry to have to report to our friends at Brink that Bill Herzog (Zogtone) passed away February 17. Bill was one of my closest friends. He was a very funny, talented man - a musician, a great eye for photography, a writer and just fun to be around. life without Bill around just won't be the same.
I hope the Brinksters and any other of Bill's many friends can get together in the near future and just sit around and swap Zog stories in rememberance of this remarkable guy we were lucky enough to know. I'll talk to Deena (BurningSand) about setting something up.
It would be nice if any of you would like to comment on Bill at the bottom of this article.
I would like to write more but it is still too soon and too painful.
We'll miss you buddy.

jesus christ! zog was the first ever person to comment on my first posting on the brink.
i put up a song and he said something positive, gentle and a little ethereal......
he asked me to come play down near where he lived and i never made it.
i didn't even know he was unwell.
i'm so sorry and saddened that i never met him in the flesh before he took his leave.
please let me know if there will be a gathering as i'll be coming out to california next week

Happy to leave another comment about Bill. Although I did actually get to meet Zog in the flesh we were internet buds for the most part. We tried to meet over fishing poles and bait but never got the chance. Thing I liked about Bill was his energy and enthusiasm. Obviously he was a smart and talented guy, but the world is full of smart and talented people many of whom work so hard at being cool and aloof it's maddening...but Zog just put it all out there on his sleeve.
He was the freaking Obi-Wan Kenobi of schmoozing and made no apologies for it. Love this picture of him with Don Henley and Glen Frey

I'm sure he had his faults, probably more than a little bit vain, but what man worth his salt isn't?
PS Kathleen, here is some info you might be interested in from our own Burning Sand
"Okay, hoedowners, this year's hoedown is going to be somewhat different. We will start rolling in on Thursday, as always, and will have the Torres Room available to us from Thursday evening through Sunday morning. We will have all day Friday, Friday evening, and all day Saturday more or less to ourselves, though I expect some of Zog's local buddies may drop by now and then.
The big difference this year will be that on Saturday afternoon, we will cease playing, exit the Torres Room and lock the door, and those who want to can go to a memorial service for Bill in the amphitheater of the State Park. Everyone is requested to wear a Hawaiian shirt.
Following the service, I have invited everyone back to the hoedown room at The Springs for a reception. Bill Sr. and Jeannie will be attending the service, and I hope they will come to the reception. There is a BBQ on the patio and the room has a kitchen, so I'd like to put out a good spread. Anyone who wants to help me pull this off is invited to email me offlist. I want to keep it logistically simple, which means organizing well ahead of time.
Here's what's being published with the obituary to come out in the March 5 edition of the Borrego Sun:
Memorial Service for Bill Herzog
Saturday, March 28
5:30 pm
Anza-Borrego State Park Amphitheater
Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather in the Torres Room at the Springs at Borrego RV Resort for an informal reception."
Mrs Sepulveda and I will be there to pay our respects.

We miss him already. He'll always be remembered in the Brink Hall of Fame as an honest, and balanced contributor, not afraid of a little nuance. He told it like he saw it, he heard it like he sang it... a case of good beer, a dusty guitar, in the back of a pickup somewhere near Mexico.

Kinda numb here... I guess the story that will forever stick was when the pressure cooker full of corn beef and cabbage exploded on Saint Paddy's Day and he wound up at the emergency room. What happened... had he been ill?

Bill died from a fall, head injury.
Speaking of exploding cabbage, how many of us would put the pictures of our fried head on the internet? Bill was a no-bullshit guy.
For those of you that have wondered about Mongo, Bill's cat he is settled in here at the ranch and I guess he's here for good. Damn cat sleeps snuggled up against me every night. I guess Zog wasn't the only softy in the Borrego Brain Trust.
Speaking of the "Brain Trust" it just isn't the same without Zog there disrupting things (not to mention one of the charter members quit drinking - not me - don't panic and sell your Jack Daniels stock)so we had one last round to the Zogster and threw the official drinking cups (provided by Bill) in the fire.
One more thing while I'm spouting off here - who the hell do I call now when something really funny happens on Family Guy or My Name Is Earl? Most people just don't get it, Bill got it.

Best wishes to all who knew Zogtone and his family. I only knew him via the Brink. His articles and submissions I enjoyed.
