Dear Mr. Eye,

I was really very pleased to see this short turn up in the jury docket of The Brink. It's nicely shot, nicely acted, nicely executed in general, but the knife job is outstanding. My friend DAVO, also a member of This Brink, sometimes comes up with equally unexpected editing that elevates "nice" to "outstanding." I'd love to put the two of you in touch with one another as I think you might both benefit from the good fortune of being mutual friends of mine.

You may find yourself wondering thoughts such as these: "Does he never tire of the pompously self-induced idiot routine?" and your work suggests to me that your conclusion might well be the precociously accurate "No, he does it so goddamn often it must give him pleasure!"

Enough of the horseshit for the time being. Where the clip job is frighteningly good, to my eye, is in the staccato effect you pulled from the dropped boxers through the barking dog and into the daughter's arrival and her histrionics. Quite seriously now: the clipping saves an entirely obvious story board gimmick from drowning. My hat is tipped, Mr. Eye.

Now, on to paying work -- the musician Jeffrey Dean Foster is rummaging through precisely nineteen zillion feet of footage of himself onstage and backstage with an inordinate amount of strange semi-related cityscapes and assorted weirdness, with the intent of cobbling together a quality video or maybe two in support of his lost treasure, the album entitled "Million Star Hotel."

You can give his tunes a listen at:

orat his MySpace site or probably some other fucking places as well. If I wasn't such a (no sham) inept fool I'd include hot links, but I always forget how to do stuff like that. Jeffrey wanted a sort of DA Pennebaker feel to the film and I think we provided it. It's hard even for us to accurately recall who shot what -- the we being my fabulous self and QuakerGirl from That Brink I mentioned earlier in this fascinating note.

Anyway, Mr. Foster will need the assistance of a good knife dude soon, funded by either by a state Arts Council grant or underwritten by a foolishly generous friend, and your keen eye came immediately to mind, Mr. Eye. I'd like to be able to sit down and cut this crap and talk business soon. No favors for friends. I don't ever do business that way. To "get a deal" with an artist rotates queasily on the word "get" in my sensibility.

Anyway, I truly do think you'd enjoy the acquaintance of my friend DAVO from Seattle. I don't have his address handy right this instant but if I remember I'm supposed to find it sometime in the near or distant future maybe Katie will send it to you. Katie? She's a person who lives around the corner from me and went to high school with my daughter and her parents are very dear friends of mine and... oh, you probably don't needall these details, do you?

I just can't help myself. As you probably know full well, given your background, this sort of buffoonery is nearly an Olympic sport in the South. It tickles me, so I indeulge myself in it. Life's already plenty sad, why not leaven the bread, eh? Along the same line (the serious part, about JD Foster's stuff) your brother ought to be getting a package from me tomorrow if it hasn't already arrived. And that stuff's going to need more shooting and the requisite editing as well, but it woould be on the label's dime. Sound appealing at all?

Stay in touch, pal.

Excellent! The Brink, the internet contraption I mentioned, tells me that both of you are on line. Uh, online? Dave, did the disc arrive today? And Jim, the disc is/are most of the demos for the new Chuck record. I'm hoping and praying that Yep Roc will pick up that tab. Despite my silliness, the earlier message was 99% sincere and 1% bashfulness for being such a provincial chump.

look forward to listening to everything, on a crazy schedule because I have a screening on Friday and I refuse to let it not be great so haven't slept in two days. Oh yeah, it is my birthday! Ha! I was up for almost all 24 hours of it. Dozed off for about an hour at 5 pm.... Really look forward to checking it out. Have to be honest, busy busy with stuff lately so not sure about my schedule yet.
Best, Jim Eye
