Several years ago, deep in the bowels of the happily unemployed cespool in San Francisco, a friend and I started challenging eachother to musical games where we would randomly select various elements and then one of us would have a short period of time to create a song with these restrictions.
In some cases, we may have randomly, and blindly, chosen a movie from our extensive collection and decided one of us must re-score it using no more than 4 instruments, one of which has to be a mandolin... for example...
Other times, we may have to simply create a song in the style of some randomly selected musician from the collection, which sucks if you happen to pick Rachmaninoff since neither of us were what you'd call "musical geniuses."

Our legendary challenge was the month long "40 Midian" challenge, which involved us creating 20 songs each, all under 2 minutes, in one month, without the other one hearing a single note until the end, where the music was revealed and then each song was titled by the listener according to whatever impression they received from the music itself. I should mention we were roomates at the time, so this challenge was not easy.

Back in what I like to call "the day," it was possible to have these challenges with friends. Nowadays, who has the time? Some day I might try to set up a site wide Brink Musical Challenge thing and offer goodies or some such to the winners. For the moment, I'll just upload the few of my songs I still have (hard drive crash) and explain the challenge behind them. Maybe you'll be inspired to match the challenge and blow my failed musical skills away.
