Father, I have sinned. Yes father, I haven't posted to The Brink in an eternity. Those of you (and by the server stats it looks like we somehow still have a community about 800 to 1000 strong) who do regularly have most certainly noticed my absence. Or maybe not (lately there has been a noticeable drop in posts and amount of members logging in). Well here's the thing, I've been away making a film, making a living, making other stuff. The Brink seems to have done fine by its' own little self even as it seems to die a slow death. It still goes, right? Maybe that's some sort of testament to the way we built it. Automatic wordomatic, mastication. So get to the point Mr. Vinik....
Right. Honestly, what I'm getting at here is that there is no here there. There wasn't any there here to begin with, and yes, we'd like to find some more people who want to put energy into Brink. So if you know any PHP code writers, web developers, peoples with really good ideas, send them our way and we'll put them to work.
But back to the no here there. I'm talking about domain. Our domain. The domain. Brink.com. Yes folks, we are creating subdomains! So mark your books and book your marks, The Brink is moving to mag.brink.com. And did I mention we started a blog? Oh god yes, a blog. That will be at blog.brink.com. Feel free to peruse.
Some of you may also have heard about our city guides. Tune into www.brinkguide.com for more information, but the long and short of it is we hope to launch the first 4 or 5 cities on both the iPhone and Android platforms and maybe even Blackberry, too, sometime around May. And that date keeps getting pushed back as the reality of a venture of that sort sets in. But please note, we are *paying* people to write for our city guides. Let us know if you want to help out. We hope they will prove to be a useful tool when setting foot in a new city and we also hope their buzz will generate more Brink buzz, including here, and be, as the twenty-year olds in the room like to say, "super awesome", for everyone.
Why all this domain switching and pandering to the blogosphere of all blobs? Well from one blob to another, the Brink team is growing. I didn't say growing up, I said growing. They wanted their own voice, they didn't want to be seen in the same neighborhood or same domain as The Brink... and that means you and yes, well, it's about commerce. We didn't wanted to mix commerce into Brink so we decided to take the commerce out of Brink. Make sense? I'm sure it will to the more sober of you.
I can give you ten other reasons but I won't. Suffice to say we will put something stable and dignified up at www.brink.com and the rest of you (the less stable and less dignified) are still welcome at mag.brink.com. And whether this proves to be some magical SEO wizardry and a brilliant commercial move all at once, or just one more in a string a failed exploits... well only time will tell. Until then, I'm signing out. Yes I take a peek now and then, so don't think you can say things that I won't know about...
Bon Voyage,
dv

It's my humble opinion that the "old school" business model is still the best. If you provide a customer with a good quality product and/or service - treating them well in the process - you've developed a win-win situation. I've been doing my grocery shopping with the same store (when I live near one) since the seventies because they treat their customers and employees well.
I don't use credit/debit cards online because I don't feel safe doing so. Things that pop up in my face or try to lead me cause me to back away. I will not buy an iPhone because I'm told you can only use one provider who makes demands of you. It makes me laugh a bit to hear you talk of dignity and stability. I guess the recent bailout spectacle shines with these attributes - major U.S. corporations begging for a welfare check from the government. The internet is a very dignified place. Try a search for adult entertainment, then look at what turns up in the hundreds of thousands of hits you'll receive. An elderly friend and myself tried this at a library where it's supposed to be filtered and received 500,000 hits. Checking a few, they were hardcore.
I moved to Hillsboro, OR in 1994 as things took off. The engineers and programmers working for Intel were depressed. They understood something they weren't allowed to speak too freely about. The bottom line seems to be that the same people who led us into this deep recession have been busy screwing everyone they can - the high priests of technology being no exception.
Edwin Black wrote about the relationship between IBM and the Nazis. How much more successful would they be today, given all this technology "Rocket Man" doesn't understand? And... yes, that is 'one ugly fish'
