ART & COMMERCE

  • picture

I know that somewhere art and business collide. As for me, I have never found myself at that particular intersection. I would love to think that Ray Charles' genius was nurtured by the individuals at Atlantic who brought his music to the masses for everyone's advantage. Looking back it seems to me that it didn't take another "genius" or a pair of magic ears to figure out that Brother Ray had all the potential in the world to make a fortune. If Colonel Parker was so taken with Elvis' artistic integrity how did we end up with Kissin' Cuzzins? Let me get this straight; it was okay for the Chess brothers to live like other rich business men and give Mr. Waters the opportunity to paint the fucking ceiling in the studio? Who's the artist here? I would be satisfied to think that the combination of a smart, hard working music man and a creative genius might prosper and result in the best of the art getting to the public. Doesn't seem to match reality. Fuck Dick Clark. Fuck Alan Freed. Fuck Ahmet Ertegun. Save a special spot in the hottest ring in hell for Clive Davis. I have never met Danny Goldberg. Could he be the only exception in a shame-filled industry? Will we ever see another John Hammond? Have these bozos left the cake out in the rain for too long?
