BURN DOWN THE MISSION

I knew we were in for a magic evening the second the taco wagon rolled up. The line on the sidewalk in front of The Make Out Room could only mean...well anything I guess, but tonight it meant that Chuck Prophet and The New Mission Express were back on their home turf after the European leg of the Soap and Water tour...

...The stroll past the halfway house on Van Ness had Mrs. Sepulveda and I feeling like The Out-of-Towners but we began to relax as (((Belle Sound))) recording artist Sonny Smith and his little Martin guitar gave us a sweet set of love songs. "He's good" Mrs. Sepulveda says, "just him and his songs in this noisy place, why don't you do that?"

"Because I'm a pussy."

"Oh that's right. I'm sorry, I forgot. Go get us another drink."

We sipped our drinks and watched the crowd. Stephanie Finch was absolutely gleaming as I made a complete paparazzo of myself. Mr. Prophet made it to our table and graciously introduced himself. Todd Roper walked by and I tried not to think about that time I smoked marijuana and, I mean – really - listened to Fashion Nuggett…where was I?

James Deprato aka "Jimi the Peach" looked nervous. After all he was back in California, where they take the child labor laws very seriously. For a minute there I thought he was on to me, but now I'm sure he was just worried I'd try to walk out with his pedalboard. The investigation continues.

Then Mr. Prophet and NME treated us to as fine a set as I've ever heard. As fine a set of songs that anyone could ever hope for. I was going to write down a set list but I was having too much fun. Everybody was. Big, happy face splitting smiles all around. Towards the end of the set I saw John Murry hanging out by the back exit but the place was so packed I couldn't get to him.

I was at the bar as the band was getting called back for an encore. Lo and behold John is up on the stage sporting Mr. Deprato's Stratocaster and they go into Mink DeVille's Spanish Stroll. I swear it sounded like it was born right there over on Delores Street. Well from that point on I'm afraid I behaved like a 300 lb. 12 year old girl at a Bay City Rollers concert. Sorry about all that.

Finally met John in person. He's doing good. He's busy, and I'm really looking forward to seeing him and Bob Frank along with Kathleen next month.

I've got another one. Keven T. White! The Happiest Man In Show Business!

That guy just smiles and dances the whole time. And he sounds so smooth and fat. That song "Doubter Out Of Jesus/All Over You"? Just thinking about the bass line makes my fingers hurt. He just smiles and digs in and keeps it going, makes it look easy.

Please, anybody what's the name of the CP counting song? Chorus: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, repeat.

Got the new record after the Turf Club show. The show and record are both great.
