ROADS & ROADKILL
made a short, too short trip down to Everglades City FL last weekend. Great place, and nice time to be there - no skeeters anywhere. Lots of birds - it's hard for me to imagine what it was like down there in the early 20th century, before 90-95% of the birds died off, were killed or moved on. Everglades City itself is a pretty quiet place - the Circle K and another convenience store are the only "corporate" places I saw - no fast food, banks, WalMart or anything like. Went to two stores looking for a banana - no luck - the lady at one of the stores said that "they have to go to town" for those, and they might have some later in the week.

Hey I love these pics cos I grew up in Naples, which is about thirty miles away. Everglades City once a hotbed of drug importation in the 70s, real Miami Vice stuff. A fun day trip today - all those flat, watery vistas. If you enjoyed that, a drive across old one lane Highway 41, from Naples to Miaimi is also fantastic. About halfway across is the gallery of the famous Ansel Adams of the Everglades, Clyde Butcher, which is worth stopping at. Also loads of airboat rides, Seminole Indian villages, beautiful views across the Everglades, and, on the outskirts of Miami, a fantastic, old fashioned Southern bbq place. Get the ribs. Thanks for the pics.

It's only rednecks there, they hate Cubans. Hey - Chuck Prophet - do I get a free CD or something for sending you that excellent picture that you did not use on your excellent new CD?

I'll buy that sammitch next time you're in town, Chuck. That's one of the things I missed most when I was living out west - along with a good Greek salad

johneder - I rode 41 all the way to the Miccosukee reservation. Nicer stuff on the back roads that I went on. Went by Clyde's gallery, but didn't stop in - maybe next time. The captain on the boat trip I went on mentioned the drugs connection when we went by the airport - but my main reason for wanting to go there was having read Killing Mr. Watson, by Peter Matthiessen . Great start to a trilogy, and reminders of Florida gone by

"it's got two kinds of pig meat - ham and roast pork
and a slice of white cheese in the shape of new york
so put on a pickle and pick up your fork
say 'el cubano' ...that's a cuban sandwich"

Killing Mr. Watson is a fantastic book - very well researched - a lot of the names of families mentioned are familiar from growing up there, like the Storters. I had a Mrs. Storter for first grade teacher.
In the mid-70s the usually low income fishermen of Everglades City started buying new boats, Cadillacs, building big houses, etc. They were running dope in thru the intercoastal waterway. Eventually the DEA took away their boats.
Chuck P. - don't have yr email address - send to me at john.eder@sbcglobal.net
