HOMEMADE HOT FUDGE

  • picture

When I used to work as a waitress at Big Boy, I had the extreme pleasure of making ice cream treats and deserts for my customers.

This is where I developed my rather unhealthy addiction for ice cream toppings -- strawberry, pineapple, hot caramel, hot fudge....

I used to (sort of) joke that I wanted one of the 5 lb cans of hot fudge as a birthday present.

Instead, I got this recipe:

Homemade Hot Fudge

You will need:
4 cups powdered sugar
1 large bag chocolate chips
2 large cans evaporated milk
2 sticks of oleo or butter
2 teaspoons vanilla

What you do:
Cook the milk, sugar and chips on medium heat until the chocolate is melted and the mixture thickens.

Remove from heat and add oleo and vanilla.

Put back on heat and cook approximately 5 minutes.

This makes a lot of hot fudge, so if you aren't a shameless addict, you may want to cut the recipe in half.

Hot fudge...drool,drool. Big Boy. Remember those metal shake cups? They used to give me the squeemies when my spoon made contact with the metal. Like fingernails on a chalkboard...

I know what you mean, BurningSand! There was an older woman who worked with us who always managed to hit the metal cup against the mixing dealie when it was still spinning and make this horrendous noise...

The shakes were sooo good though, I managed! I was in a Big Boy (it's been years) about a month ago, and I was actually disappointed that the shakes come in a glass now...

you know what used to make me squeamish as a lad? the feel of those flat wooden spoons against my tongue when you'd get a frozen malt at the ballpark. that and baseball in general.

Those things were gross. Reminiscent of going to the doctors and saying, 'ahhhhhh'.

Then there were those sandpaper textured plastic chairs we had in school (sometimes attached to the desk, oh so comfy!)--instant squeamies.
