THE LATE SHIFT

I don't know if this is Eye Candy or Rides or Poetic. Probably all three. These photographs were taken by the shooter I most prefer to work with -- whether stills or moving pictures. Her name is Katie Bond Ford and I asked her to haul her cameras out to shoot the annual Heavy Rebel Weekend here in Winston-Salem NC, the Seat of Western Civilzation. As always, lots of greasers, psychobilly ruffians, loose _loose_ woman and oceans of Schlitz and Pabst Blue Ribbon. About half the crowd hailed from San Berdoo and thereabouts; the other half seemed to be the hillbilly ancestors of the old moonshine runners. Katie has a singluar eye and can't be dissuaded from recording her own vision. People don't turn up very often in her work -- she seems completely attuned to texture, tone, and the suggested rather than overt. A fine talent, with her own vision. She asked me to write a poem accompanying her images, but I found there was poetry aplenty in her unblinking and unflinching eye. Please enjoy.

I agree. But all credit goes to Katie Bond.

Guy, you wouldn't be an Unknown Hinson fan would you?

Jesus creeping God! Unknown Hinson.

Not a fan so much as an awestruck witness. Hinson's like Captain Beefheart, Root Boy Slim and Joe Don Looney rolled into one unstable and certainly hazardous package. At a club I'm part of (www.the garage.com) we book him two or three times a year. He never breaks character.

If he's _in_ character. I truly don't know.

Well next time he's in the area you should do a feature on him. Unkown Hinson and The Brink were made for each other.

Schlitz and Pabst Blue Ribbon? Did they have a time machine there? I thought those breweries went out of business after my Dad died.

We were going to send you a care package of real beer but as Zog and I started to pack it we noticed they were all empties.

Great photography.

I assure you DD, I only shop the finest of establishments, and I have seen Ol' Blue on the shelves within the past couple of months...

The photography praise belongs to Little Katie Bond, one of my minders. She's shy. We should make her contribute here more. (Although she _was_ taking pictures of Sheriff Andy Taylor's house tonight.) Where I live. Opie's done grown and gone, but the parlor still reeks of the silent but deadly cabbage farts Florence Bavier used to do squeekies with while she portrayed dear Aunt Bea.

As for beer, at the joint I'm part of, the band's always ask for PBR. So does Kevin and so does Todd -- assuming that the Mission Express actually exists. We also sell Schlitz, but mainly to greasers -- and at the same price as Yuengling: buck a bottle. Do we make any money? Of course not.

But it sho noff is fun, Ope.
